Caribbean Vacation

What an amazing place the Caribbean is!  I just got back from a week visiting 4 different islands in the Eastern Caribbean.  We visited the Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Kitts.

Our first stop was the Bahamas.  The ocean was so warm and so clear.  We spent hours at the Tiki Beach Hut having lunch, sipping drinks out of a coconut and just enjoying the beautiful water.  We also stayed one night at Atlantis.  This is an amazing resort.  One of the attractions is the Mayan Temple slides.  This structure is over six stories high and features a series of water rides, including the Leap of Faith, a 60-foot near-perpendicular plunge sending riders through a clear acrylic tunnel submerged in a shark-filled lagoon.  There is also the Power Tower which is the tallest feature of Aquaventure.  It stands at 120 feet tall and houses four water slides: The Abyss, The Drop, The Falls, and The Surge.  My favorite was the Abyss.  This water slide drops riders a near-vertical 50 feet into total darkness and through a tumbling waterfall, ending the journey in a deep cenote filled with Alligator Gars.  That was definitely a thrill ride!

After the Bahamas, we stayed at St. Thomas for a couple of nights.  With its picture-perfect beaches, it is a great place to hide away and relax or fill your day up with exotic adventures.  We did both.  The first day, we chartered a boat and had an incredible experience exploring the waters of St. Thomas and St. John.  There is nothing quite like taking a personal boat out onto the crystal-clear waters and enjoying the Caribbean beauty from the sea.  Our captain stopped at two locations off St. John for us to go snorkeling.  We saw sea turtles, nurse sharks, sting rays, and a variety of colorful fish.  We stopped at Joe’s Rum Hut for lunch and a few beverages before heading back on the boat to St. Thomas.

The last island on our list was St. Kitts.  St. Kitts is a gorgeous island in the West Indies.  The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean.  We hired a driver to take us around and show us some sites in St. Kitts.  The first place we stopped was Brimstone Hill Fortress Cannons were first mounted on Brimstone Hill in 1690 by the British.  The construction of the fort carried on intermittently for just over 100 years.  This gave us a lot of history of the island plus the views from on top of the hill were amazing.  We then went to an old sugar cane plantation.  In 1775, St. Kitts, with its rich volcanic soil and ideal climate was the world leader in sugar can cultivation, and was the wealthiest of all the English colonies in the Caribbean.  With the total abolishment of slavery throughout all the British colonies in 1834, came the end of the sugar industry.  Some of the plantations are still well preserved and are toured by visitors.  Towards the end of the day, we stopped at ShipWreck Beach Bar & Grill to eat and to go in the water.  ShipWreck is a quintessential, open air beach restaurant right on the water.  We enjoyed true Caribbean spirit while sipping on our island style drink and indulging in a Caribbean-style meal.  After lunch and enjoying the water we headed back.  It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

One essential I always bring on my vacation is the Penless Postcard. With the writable QR code already on the postcard, it is so easy to upload a picture or a video and send the postcard to friends and family.  Everyone always loves to receive the postcard and scan the QR code to see our pictures and videos of our vacation.  It’s so fun and so easy.
