Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day always feels like a much-needed holiday. Labor Day falls on the first Monday of every September. This day is meant for the creation of labor movement and is dedicated to the economic and social achievements of American Workers. This yearly national tribute is for all the strength, prosperity, and well-being that citizens of the United States has put in. No one is quite sure who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some think it’s Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, while others think it’s Matthew Maguire, a machinist. Either way, the majority of Americans benefit by getting work off!

The first Labor Day was actually celebrated on a Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. The second Labor Day was held a year later on September 5, 1883. On the third year, September 5th fell on a Monday. Therefore, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday. Labor Day was becoming more popular the following year in 1885.

Labor Day use to be celebrated with big parades to exhibit the public’s strength and labor organizations. Communities would then follow by a festival for the amusement for the workers and their families. Later on, speeches were added by outstanding men and woman.

When I was a kid I use to spend every Labor Day with my grandma. She would take me to the fair, we would eat hot dogs and have frozen lemonade. We would check out the different venues where we would shop for cool trinkets. Now days, my husband and I celebrate Labor Day at our house with some friends. We sent our invitations out this year with the Penless American Flag stickers! Our friends got a kick out of the video we sent them. As newlyweds, this is only our second year having people over for Labor Day. Before this we never really knew what to do on this holiday.
